WHAT IS PERMACULTURE?
Permanent-Agriculture / Permanent-Culture
Permaculture is a design system that connects and organizes information and techniques in a way that mimics the patterns, function, and ecosystem model of nature (bio-mimicy).
Using Ethics and principals is it's ultimate guide, Permaculture is a system that benefits all living things while simultaneously providing all the needs of humanity in a harmonious and meaningful way. Permanent solutions for food, water, fiber, fuel, shelter, and culture.
Permaculture can be applied to anything from land use and agriculture, to creating a sustainable business model. The possibilities are endless!
Matthew is a Designer, Educator, and Consultant of Permaculture Design and Owner of Treetop Permaculture. Matthew has a very diverse background from insurance and finance, construction, to performing arts as a DJ for over 15 years. In a search for something meaningful, he found his calling in natural farming and land stewardship after moving to an off grid property in Berry Creek, CA back in 2008.
"I went into the foothills to re-discover my roots and become more self reliant. I first discovered the ideas of Natural Farming after reading a book called “One Straw Revolution” by Masanobu Fukuoka, and that opened the door to the world of Permaculture. The discovery of Permaculture was the beginning to a life changing journey for me" .
Matthew soon received his Permaculture Design Certificate from Geoff Lawton of the Australian Permaculture Research Institute and has put in over 5000 hours of design work to date. In 2014 Matthew started Berry Creek Garden Project through a grant from the USDA. The project re-opened the local school garden and garden program, and educated the local community in natural gardening techniques. His roles included grant writer, project director and educator. He worked with Dr. Elaine Ingham in 2015 as Assistant Farm Manager, developing Dr. Ingham’s soil research institute and became an expert in composting techniques and applications. Matthew has taught and facilitated many workshops and classes in Butte and Sacramento County and finds his passion in sharing earth magic with others.
Sarah is passionate about teaching the community the importance of preventative health through nutrition and growing your own food. Sarah and Matthew share a love of compost and through this found how incredible mushrooms are. Sarah's favorite topic to share is the importance of medicinal mushrooms for human health. Just ask her about it! :)
